Simple Epithelium: Defined as epithelium one layer thick.  Generally is important in some form of exchange, whether passive filtering (as in squamous forms) or glandular secretion, or some combination of both.  Click on pictures or titles to see larger versions of each example.  Remember to determine where the free surface begins, and where the basement membrane marks a transition zone to the underlying connective tissue.
