during growth, differentiation, and replenishment of cells lost in life.

These pictures represent mitosis in animal cells.  The functioning role of a cell or tissue is carried out when the cell is in the stage not studied here ... Interphase.  It is only toward the latter stage of the cell cycle that cells prepare for duplication through the mitotic process shown here.  The intent is to ensure a full complement of genetic material be delivered to each new cell along with sufficient amounts of cytoplasmic organelles. This permits the new generation of cells to begin "life" with the necessary machinery to carry out its responsibilities.  This process also standardizes the distribution of genetic material.
