STATISTICS 301 - SPRING 2013

ELEMENTARY STATISTICAL METHODS

  • PREPARATION

    • Make sure you are registered in this course.  If you are enrolled at Purdue University North Central (PNC), you can use admissions to do this.

    • Watch getting started online videos:

    • Buy texts: Statistics: Informed Decisions Using Data (4th Edition, bundled with MyLab and Mastering) and students solution manual

      • Required texts can be bought from PNC bookstore (1-219-785-5247).

      • To repeat: text must be BUNDLED with online package MyLab and Mastering (also called MyLab/Mastering, MyStatLab, MyMathLab, but NOT MathXL)

    • Print STAT 301 syllabus

    • Logon to your Blackboard Learn account by the first day of classes.

    • Register into MyLab and Mastering (you need both a Course ID from me and a Student Access Code from text)

      • You are allowed to use MyLab and Mastering free for TWO WEEKS before paying

      • provide email address you want me to use when registering in MyLab and Mastering

    • You will blocked from starting any MyLab online assignments until you provide me with adequate contact information, including:. 

      • a telephone number that gets through to you 

      • an email address you really use

      • skype contact (may never use skype but screen-share feature very useful if you need my help)

      (It is important to keep up.  Please contact me if you are falling behind.  I will make a point of contacting students who are absent, miss assignments, or have a D/F.)

    • check out tutorial videos for StatCrunch 

    • Check out frequently asked questions for STAT 301 students.

    • Look over previous course material.

  • WEEK 1.

    Chapter 1. Data Collection

    • class lecture notes 1, not handed in

    • Submit answers online to homework 1 questions.

      • due on or before Tuesday of deadlines.

      • homework 1 available and submitted in MyLab.

      • you must achieve 80% on homework 1 before moving onto homework 1.  Take advantage of extensive online help given with all questions in homework 1.

      • All questions in homework 1 are found in Statistics: Informed Decisions Using Data text.

    • Submit answers online to untimed test 1 selected at random for you by MyLab.

      • due on or before Thursday (not Friday!) of deadlines.

      • untimed test 1 available and submitted using MyLab.

      • once in MyLab, click on show all to see both homework 1 and untimed test 1.

      • untimed test 1 will not be accepted unless you have achieved 80% on homework 1.

      • do not use Blackboard email to send me either of your assignments

      • submit as many times as you want before deadline, receive highest score of all submissions.

      • untimed test scores available in Blackboard Friday of deadlines

      • use ID number I emailed you to identify your current total score and grade.

    • StatCrunchLab1 document gives list of all StatCrunch instructions used this week.  It is for your information; it is not handed in.

  • WEEK 2.

    Chapter 2. Organizing and Summarizing Data

    • class lecture notes 2, not handed in

    • homework 2 online questions due on or before Tuesday of deadlines

    • do quiz 1 online in MyLab on or before midnight Thursday deadlines.

      • one 20 minute timed submission is allowed; each student does quiz by themselves with no help from others.

      • quiz 1 scores available in Blackboard after 9 pm late Friday night. 

      • use ID number to locate your current total score and grade.

  • WEEK 3.

    Chapter 3. Numerically Summarizing Data
