Grading:
A = 90.0%, B = 85.0%, C = 80.0%, D = 75.0%. 1/5 by tests, 1/5 by
lab work,
1/5 by project,
1/5 by homeworks, & 1/5 by work in lectures.
So 4/5 of your grade is not
determined by exams, but by your regular work. This system
rewards attendance &
cooperation,
not cram for exam. Most instructors have two goals: that students
learn much and enjoy the course. Individuals perform best, enjoy
the experience & learn the most when working in a cooperative &
competitive environment; e.g. a league of sports teams.
Competition
occurs because grades are determined in part by exams. Please
cooperate
in all other areas, but turn in your
work.
Goals:
The
goals of BIOL 205/206 & 238/239 are to make you knowledgeable about
biology, its role both in society, and in K-8 education; and to learn
(by
use) the scientific method, laboratory & field skills.
The
goals
do not include making you into a teacher, nor providing you with the
K-8
curriculum; but to enable you to handle those things if/when the time
comes. Links to free K-12 teaching resources are provided.
All of the lab work is
adaptable to the K-8 classroom.
Biology 205/206 & 238/239 are about at the high school
advanced placement level.
Teaching
Philosophy: The
textbook is carefully chosen
to
be the lectures. So the purpose of lecture time is to actively
learn
biology, & we work together on a variety of activities. The
homeworks
are also intended to assist your learning. Test questions
are
multiple choice, like the homeworks.
Proposed
Schedule: We study "Essential Biology" for 2
semesters.
BIOL 205 & 238 cover Ch 1, 18-20, & 2-12. Ch 1 is an
intro., 18-20
are
ecology,
best done in the fall & useful for projects about the (human impact
on
the)
environment. Then, back to Ch 2 to cover the rest by May
2005.
Most labs (Ex) are in Enger & Ross, but a few are at links.
Some
Enger Ex may be done in lecture.
