Biology 206: Biology for Elementary School Teachers II .CD. .Resources. .SEA.

Instructor
: Peter Wilkin, SWRZ 111B, hours T 10-2, WF 2-4, 785-5227.  Biology office: SWRZ 120, 785-5298
Lect: WF 9-10, Lab (SWRZ 118): R @ 8 or 10 or 1.
Books: Essential Biology with Physiology (used OK, CD is useful) & Lab: Biology: Science for Life, must be unused as it is graded.

Policies:
If you have a disability requiring accommodation please contact your instructor now.  Attendance is required, see grading below.  Missed lectures & labs cannot be made up, except in an emergency.

Grading: A: 86.0%, B: 80.0%, C: 74.0%, D: 68.0%.  1/2 by tests, 1/2 by lecture & lab work, for grade: each lecture 1 (25), each lab 5 (75).  As 1/2 of your grade is determined by regular work this rewards attendance & cooperation.  I have two goals: that you learn much, & enjoy the course.  Individuals perform best, enjoy the experience, & learn most when working cooperatively & competitively; e.g. a league of sports teams.  Please cooperate in all areas except tests.

Goals:  To make you knowledgeable about biology, its role in society & in K-8 education; & to learn (by use) the scientific method, laboratory & field skills.  The goals do not include making you into a teacher, nor providing you with K-8 curriculum; but to enable you to handle those when the time comes.  Most lab work is adaptable to the K-8 classroom.  BIOL 205/206 are ~ at the HS AP level.

Teaching Philosophy:  The textbook is carefully chosen to be the lectures.  So lectures are for actively learning biology, & I am open to suggestions for classroom work.  Test questions are multiple choice, based on end-of-ch Summary of Key Concepts.  If you have a question in class please ask, as others probably have it too.  Come on time, since we start right away.  Please be courteous to everyone so we can create a positive learning environment.  Turn off cell phones/beepers.
