Chapter 11-    Energy in Thermal processes

1.  Heat (Q) is energy- the heat needed to change the temperature of a substance  Q = mc DT

where c is the specific heat capacity of the substance

Units of heat- Calorie, Kilocalorie, British Thermal Unit (BTU), Joule

Calorimetry-  In a mixture, heat gained by one part = heat lost by the other part

Phase change- heat is involved when a solid melts (changes) to a liquid; or when a liquid changes to a vapor phase

Heat of fusion           Q = mLf  ; Lf is the latent heat of fusion

Heat of vaporization  Q = mLv; Lv is the latent heat of vaporization

2. Energy Transfer

    Thermal conduction, convection and radiation
